Grenade attack at Sunday market in Srinagar, over 10 injured

At least 10 people were injured after unidentified terrorists threw a grenade in a crowded Sunday market in Srinagar on Sunday. The attack, which took place near the heavily-guarded Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), comes a day after a top commander of terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was killed by security forces in the city.

According to top police sources, the grenade was thrown from a flyover near the Radio Kashmir crossing, targeting shoppers at the Sunday market. All those injured were local Kashmiris.
The explosion left shoppers scrambling for cover and caused panic in the area.
Security forces, along with medical teams, immediately rushed to the scene after the explosion. The injured have been shifted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar.

A search operation has been launched to track the terrorists.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack and said there can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians.
“The last few days have been dominated by headlines of attacks and encounters in parts of the Valley. Today’s news of a grenade attack on innocent shoppers at the ‘Sunday market’ in Srinagar is deeply disturbing. There can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians. The security apparatus must do everything possible to end this spurt of attacks at the earliest so that people can go about their lives without any fear,” the Chief Minister said in a tweet.
On Saturday, security forces gunned down a Lashkar commander, identified as Usman, who was active in the Valley for several years. He was also involved in the killing of Inspector Masroor Wani, who was shot dead from close range while he was playing cricket in October last year.
Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans and two policemen were injured in the encounter.
